Social Security Tax Now Over £26,000,000
Receipts from the social security charge of Is 6d in the pound for the year ended March 31 totalled £26,176,634, according to the annual report of the Commissioner of Taxes on the administration of the Act, presented to the House of Representatives. Of this total, £16,105,490 came from the charge on salary and wages, the balance being the charge on income other than salary and wages. A total of 662 exemptions was granted in whole or in part. The amount of social security charge and national security tax remitted for past years was £15,614.
The fund began the year with a credit of £5,410,976 carried forward from 1946-47. Figures from the abstract of revenue and expenditure of the Public Account showed chat monetary benefits paid in the year ended March 31 last totalled £32,485,471. Total expenditure, including that on medical services, was £40,443,000. A subsidy of £16,000,000 from' the Consolidated Fund enabled the year to be completed with a credit of £7,242,000.
