SOUTH ISLAND ISSUE MAY BE RAISED IN HOUSE

WELLINGTON, June 27.

The alleged neglect of the South Island by the Government is expected to be a major and controversial subject in the House of Representatives this week. It is considered likely that the Opposition may choose to make the subject its talking point for the Imprest Supply Bill debate on Wednesday. The Government’s delay in coming to a decision on the status of the Harewood airport will probably be the chief ground for the Opposition’s complaint against the Government, but other subjects may include the retention of the seed-testing station at Palmerston North and the alleged neglect of the accommodation needs of Canterbury Agricultural College at Lincoln.

The keenness with which some National Party members from the South Island are looking forward to such a debate is not shared by some southern Government members, who may be placed in the embarrassing position of having to defend the Government’s actions affecting their own constituencies.
