BRITISH COMPLAINTS ABOUT NEW ZEALAND BONELESS BEEF
LONDON, March 20. The Ministry of Food has withdrawn most of the consignments of New Zealand boneless beef allocated to Bristol, following complaints that it was not fit for domestic ration, says the Daily Herald. Eighty butchers refused to sell it, saying it was suitable only for manufacturing purposes.
No information about this matter has been received by the New Zealand Meat Board. It was suggested last evening that the article in the Daily Herald referred to the normal type of boneless beef prepared from bulls and old cull cows, which was always regarded as suitable only for manufacturing and not to ordinary beef, supplies of which have been boned in recent years to conserve shipping space. London Manager Sending Full Report to N.Z. [N.Z.P.A. SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT] (Rec. 9.5 a.m.) LONDON, March 21. “I am sending a statement to the board in New Zealand with a full report on the situation,” said Mr S. A. Chisholm, London manager of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, commenting on the report that Bristol butchers had refused to distribute New Zealand boneless beef. “When the board gets my report it may in its wisdom-'decide to make a statement,” he added. It is understood that Ministry officials at Bristol considered that the meat in question would pass for the domestic ration. When the retail trade rejected it, howecer, the officials accepted- its decision.
