JAPAN’S PEACE MOVE
BEFORE FIRST ATOMIC BOMB OVERTURES TO RUSSIA (Rec. 2.30 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 19. The Prime Minister (Mr. Attlee), replying in the House of Commons to a question whether Japan made a peace overture before the Potsdam Declaration of July 26, 1945, or before the first atomic bomb 'was dropped, said that Mr. Stalin at Potsdam on July 28, 1945, revealed that the Soviet had received a Japanese proposal that it should mediate between the Japanese and the British and American Governments,
Russia returning an unhesitating negative, not wishing to further Japanese interests. Mr. Attlee added that Japan made no peace overtures to Britain and America until 15 days after the Potsdam declaration. ’ Mr. Stalin’s information offered no new opportunity to hasten .the end of the war, since Japan, under the Potsdam Declaration, had 'Keen invited to surrender.
