JACKSON BAY ROAD

eroded section to be RESTORED CABINET APPROVES GRANT Damaged severely about two years ago when lengthy stretches of its surface were eroded by heavy seas, the road to Jackson Bay in South Westland will probably be'repaired this year. This is indicated by a grant of £6,000 for expenditure fin the access road to the township, which, according to information received from the Minister of Transport, Mr O’Brien, has. been approved by Cabinet. The road which runs parallel with the seashore for a short distance be-r fore it reaches Jackson Bay, has been affected by several northerly storms. During these the rough seas mounted the road, into which the heavy breakers have made deep inroads. Several visitations of this nature, following the initial destruction two years ago, have left the road impassable. A section about two miles in length was mainly affected by the erosion, and vehicles endeavouring to reach Jackson Bay have been compelled to leave the formed road at one spot and drive along the sea-beach for several chains before returning to the roadway. It is expected that the sum of £6,000 will cover the cost of restoring the damaged two miles to a condition that will enable the resumption of normal traffic along the roufe. The Public Works Department will carry out the work.
