Swedish Davis Cup Team “Puzzled.” LONDON, Oct. 13. The Swedish Davis Cup team left the United States puzzled by the fact that leading American players are able to play all the year round without working. The captain of the team, Curt Oestberg, commented: “I am not familiar enough with the setup to question the practices. All I can say is that with us it is work first and tennis second.” By practices Oestberg meant the fact that many American players draw regular salaries from their employers regardless of whether they are working or touring the country playing in tournament tennis. Such practices are prohibited by Sweden s Lawn Tennis Association. Torsten Johannsen, who is a car salesman, said his salary ceased the day he left Sweden. Bergelin has to complete his Army service. Bergelin and Johanssen predicted that the United States would regain the Davis Cup, with Kramer winning both singles and America taking the doubles. ■
