CRICKET Hammond’s Double Century
tengiaiid’s Lead in Drawn Game PERTH, Oct. 14. An innings of 208 by the English captain, W. R. Hammond, enabled the M.C.C. team to gain a first-innings lead of 111 runs in the match against Western Australia, which was drawn. Hammond, who was the last man out, being bowled by Puckett, hit 16 fours, 14 of them in his last 108 runs. Hammond was well supported by the slow bowler, T. P. B. Smith, who scored 46, and helped to put on 140 runs for the seventh wicket. Hammond dominated the play in making his 166th century in firstclass cricket. Hammond was sedate, watchful,.and patient ufitil his team had gained a lead. Then he opened out at loose deliveries and made several forceful shots off better-length balls. The vice-captain, N. W. Yardley, played attractively for 38, and T. P. B. Smith, although missed in the slips \yhen 23,. defended stubbornly in his seventh-wicket partnership with Hammond., In the three-quarters of an hour remaining, Western Australia scored 48 for one wicket.
