Experiments with featherweight woollens lighter than loz a yard and constructed on a seaweed base, are being made in Melbourne mills in preparation for manufacture next year. The new fabrics are like sheer georgette, but are lighter and of finer texture. Limited shipments of similar materials have arrived from England recently, but it is considered that the Australian samples are of superior quality.—Melbourne, October 14. '
Valueless Cheques A son of the late Sir George Julius, the eminent engineer, was sentenced in the Quarter Sessions to-day to 18 months’ imprisonment tor obtaining money by false pretences. He is George Velberton Julius, aged 34, and is an engineer. Julius pleaded guilty to 14 charges. Mr Justice Market! said that, though, for some persons, in humble circumstances who committed thefts, there might be sympathy, it was impossible to find any excuse for the lapses of Julius. The police evidence was that the accused had passed valueless cheques, mostly among business acquaintances, some of whom had declined to proceed against him. The total amount covered by the charges was £162.— Sydney, October 14.
