EEL UTILISATION
WEST COAST SUPPLIES CONSIDERED PROPOSAL FOR CANNING An indication has been given that the Marine Department is supporting the efforts of the Grey District Acclimatisation Society in the possibilities of canning eels in the off-season. The Secretary oi Marine, Mr. W. C. Smith, who is also chairman of the Fresh Water Fisheries Advisory Committee, referred to the canning of eels for export at a meeting of the committee in Wellington recently. He said that the Marine Department was advising the Ministry of Supply and industrialists as to the quantities of eels available, methods of organising catches, the actual canning and the utilisation of wastes for fertilisers, oils and leather. Mr. Smith added that the department was anxious to see eel fisheries operating on the widest possible basis and had endeavoured to interest firms with suitable canning plants in Otago, Canterbury, Marlborough, Westland and Auckland, in addition to Southland, where the project was first mooted. Referring to the request by the Grey Acclimatisation Society for a biologist to make a survey of its district, Mr. Smith said that the survey would be undertaken as soon as it could be arranged.
