LOCAL ELECTIONS

PROTEST AT AMENDING LEGISLATION (P.A.) NAPIER, October 14. A protest at the speed with which three bills were rushed through the House of Representatives at a late stage of the session was made by Mr R. Harding, chairman of the Hawke’s Bay County Council, at a meeting today. Mr Harding said that the Local Elections and Polls Amendment Bill had been introduced without the knowledge of those most concerned — local bodies. In face of 100 per cent, opposition of local bodies from Auckland to Bluff in regard to most of the bill’s provisions, the Minister in charge had the temerity to inform te House that there was very little objection to it. Mr Harding asserted that the Government was forcing its intentions through Parliament in such, a way as to conceal the institution of dictatorship.
