HORSES AND GOATS

PROVISION OF MEAT FOR UNRRA (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 1. New Zealanders have always been particular about'the class of meat, served on their tables, and for that reason those who slaughter and prepare animals for human consumption have been limited in their choice to cattle, sheep, and pigs. For New Zealanders this is Ikiely to remain the case, but as starving people overseas will be glad of supplies of horse and goat flesh if made available through UNRRA, a temporary extension of the definition of the term . “stock” under’ the Meat Act is made by a notice in' to-night’s Gazette. This extension means that horses and goats are added to the list of animals that'may be slaughtered in licensed establishments. The addition, however, is for the purpose of supplying such meat to UNRRA for distribution . overseas and as soon, as such demand ceases the list of “stock” will revert to its former limited scope under the Act.
