SPORTING GRAND NATIONAL

As Required in Popular Favour

SONERI’S CHANCE IN CVP

[ SPECIAL TO STAR.] CHRISTCHURCH, August 2. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National Steeplechase meeting will be opened at Riccarton to-morrow. The fields hre all large, and include horses from all parts of New Zealand. Fifteen horses are carded for the Grand National Steeplechase, and all with the exception of Timber Topper, who has contracted lameness, are likely to be paraded. The class engaged cannot be. considered very strong, and does not the average field which, has contested past Grand National Steeplechases. There is no outstanding candidate, and the issue appears very open.

The Winter Cup will present the usual' difficult problem for investors, and there should be a close dispute for favouritism. Others likely t(5 have good followings are Findon, Verdant, Tiger Tan, Tutere, Soneri, Bonny Flight and Leigh Barton, while lesser lights in Whitley, Western Front, Salary, Tribal Night, Imperial Front, Salary, Tribal Night, Imperial, Ganges and Dash o’ Dink wil also be in request. Leigh Barton will be bracketed with Western Front, and the bracket will'no doubt be the place favourite. The Paparua Handicap has also drawn an evenly balanced field, and again speculation is likely to cover a wide range. The Jumpers’ Flat will be run for the first time for some years, and a high class field will parade. The result of this and of the Trial Hurdles will no doubt help towards summing up the prospects of the Grand National Hurdles to be decided next week. The weather has been fine during the last few days, and provided there is no rain, the course, which has been rolled several times since last week's racing, should provide excellent going. , , 4 Under the win and place system, the following horses can be expected to race prominently: — Enfield Steeplechase: Roman Ned, Bravura, Golden Glow.
