Russia and Economic Co-operation

(Rec. 2 p.m.) LONDON, July 31. Pressure of economic events may oblige the eastern zone of Germany to seek closer relations with the western zones. This is indicated by an authoritative article printed in the Soviet-con-trolled journal, Diewirtschaft, says The Times Berlin correspondent. The journal says:,“The reduction of industrial capacity caused by the delivery of industrial plant for reparations and the shrinking stocks of raw material which are reflected in the substantial gap between planned and realised production for the second quarter of 1946, have enhanced the importance of interzone exchange of goods and foreign trade.” The paper describes the raw material situation in the eastern zone as serious. It draws attention to the lack of iron, hard coal, coke, leather and cotton.
