LANCASTER ARIES

FLIGHT TO NEW ZEALAND ‘ THIS MONTH

ATTEMPT ON RECORD [N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent.] (Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, July 31. When the R.A.F. Lancaster Aries takes off for New Zealand from an airfield near London about August 20, an attempt will be made to establish a new record between England and the Dominion. The present record of hours was made by an R.A.F. Transport Command Lancastrian. The Aries, 1 ’ which last year made long-distance flights over the area of the North. Magnetic Pole, will probably fly to New Zealand in three stages, with short stops at Bombay and Darwin for fuelling. Record-breaking is only a secondary object of the flight. It is expected that the Aries will stay two weeks in New Zealand and three in Australia, touring service stations. _ It is intended that the crew will demonstrate the use of the latest navigational facilities in aircraft, discuss current methods and practices of air navigation, collect material of navigational interest by personal inquiry, lecture to service personnel, and gain experience of longdistance flying over all types of terrain.
