(Rec 1 p.m.) CANBERRA, August 1.

A motion instructing the Government to investigate immediately the question of extending the child endowment to cover all children under 16 years was defeated by 34 votes to 22,'in the House of Representatives last night. The existing endowment is for 7/6 weekly, but excludes the first child in each family. Extension of the payment was proposed by Dame Enid Lyons (Liberal) during the debate on a resolution to fix the social service contributions.
