SANCTITY GONE

EMPEROR HIROHITO LOSES If AC E TOKIO July 26. Monarchy is a minor question hi Japan now, but, in the opinion ol many foreign observers, continued pressure from outside might inflame the Japanese into giving the institution more support than they do at present. An announcement in Washington recently that a Far Eastern Commission committee is considering the Question of abolishing the Emperor institution will doubtless cause strong repercussions in .monarchist circles. Any reaction, however, will be closely hidden, as has been the Japanese attitude towards recent criticism of their ruler. For the people as a whole, the problem of the Emperor’s future, is far less important than are questions of livelihood,, Hirohito has become a rather ordinary little man,’ whose personal power is slipping fast. His .people bear him a-unique affection, but little of his one-time sanctity is left. . 7 + The Japanese are always quick to change sides with expediency. Commoners no longer hesitate to brand the Emperor’s actions “foolish.” But that does not deny the depth of affection the people hold for the ruler. It means simply that the relationship now is far more realistic than in the days of unchallenged teaching that the Emperor embodied divinity. The abrupt removal of the Emperor by outside pressure would doubtless create great confusion m Japan. Although Hirohito has little influence, he retains a symbolic position, holding together his essentiallyclannish subjects. This symbolic power should be distinguished.-from the political influence he is losing.- ' Observers say that continued outside pressure in itself would elevate the Emperor question to major importance again, and perhaps transform the present unexpressed Japanese affection into strong, vociferous support. That might nullify all the progress that has been made towards realism.
