News from Track ami Stable

Portadown’s Trip. Portadown, one of the best pacers in his class in the Auckland district., is likely to make an appearance at Addington this month. He has done well since racing at Epsom in May and Pi. Dunn expects to have him well forward to undertake the trip. In his last hi starts Portadown has registered four firsts and a second, his" best form being at a mile and a half and two miles. By Jack Potts from Kewpie’s Guy. by Blue Mountain from Kewpie, Portadown is bred on excellent staying lines. If he goes to Addington Portadown will he driven by J. B. Pringle. Impressive Win. The most impressive win on the second day of the Avondale Jockey Club’s winter meeting was that of Brockton in the Telegraph Handicap. Brockton was having his first start in open company and outstayed his opponents for a clear-cut victory. A winner at his last three starts, Brockton is likely to play a part in more important events this season. Brookby Song scored his sixth "win of the season when he led the ’field home in the Whau Steeplechase. Picture of Health. The Siegfried gelding Royal Victor is a picture of good health and is coming along nicely in his work. He will start the new season's, racing on September G at Wanganui. Owned by Mr. J. Donald, Tauherenikau. of All Black fame, and trained by T. Pi. George at Opaki, Royal Victorstarted 17 times last season for three wins, two seconds, and seven thirds, a splendid record of consistency. He has splendid prospects of another good year.

Beau Pere’s Progeny. The sensational success of Beau Pere’s progeny, Honeymoon and Peretime, in providing first and second placings in the richly endowed Hollywood Derby of 50,000 dollars, or £N.Z.15,625, draws attention to the fact that two sons of Beau Pere, Beau Vite and Beaulivre, are sires jn the Rosswood stud owned by T. R. George at Masterton. Honeymoon, by Beau Pere from Panoramic, and owned by Louis B. Mayer, was the only filly in the race, which was run over a mile and a quarter in the smart time of 2.2. She is regarded as California’s outstanding filly, and has -won nine of her 15 starts. By winning the Derby, Honeymoon added 39,000 dollars to her .stake money, making a total of 180,820 dollars, or £N.Z.56.50G.

Successful Debut. Whackie made his debut as a hurdler at Marton and signalled the occasion auspiciously. He has still something to learn as a jumper, however, and it was fortunate that there was a good deal of give in the hurdles, which had been canted by some of the officials after being erected by the staff. The .Arausio gelding was hitting in front in every instance, but he did not look like falling.

Looked a Certainty. Ninety per cent, of those present at the Avondale meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday were certain, that Representative had suffered fatal injuries when he fell at the last fence in the New Lynn Hurdles. The Nightmarch gelding was in front at the time, and apparently going well within himself, when he crashed and lay where he fell, with his head almost under the rails. Representative lay for 10 minutes, not stirring in the slightest; it looked like a • broken neck or a broken back. While the veterinary surgeon was examining the gelding he realised the trouble was not as bad as it seemed. He went to the horse’s head, and after a time Representative recovered and regained his feet. The real tragedy of it was that Representa- ' live looked a certainty, for he appeared to be going very easily.

Holland’s Hat-Trick.

Jockey N. B. Holland concluded the season by registering the hattrick at Ellerslie on Saturday. In his fourth outing he was on Black Aee, and had he been better placed early he might have won, for his mount was lying in fourth place at the post. Holland won on Vidtoon, Royal Charter and Landfire. All were at good prices, and, on the allup system, he would have netted his supporters over £I2G in win-divi-dends. The owners he won for collected between them £1350 in stake money.

Outstanding Favourite. As the result of her brilliant success in the Brabazon Handicap on Saturday, Soneri has become an outstanding favourite for the Winter Cup. It is a long time since there was; such general agreement among trainers that Mr. Cunningham’s smart mare represents such an outstanding prospect for the Cup. Not many 'Brabazon winners have gone on to ’win the Winter Cup, but recent winners of the double were Bashful Lady and Gulf Stream, and there are solid grounds for the prediction that Soneri will add her name to the list this week.
