“WILL NOT MEAN RIOTS”

LONDON, July 30

Preparatory arrangements for direct action against the British were discussed at a mass meeting of Moslems in Bombay to-day. It was stated that the meeting had not decided what form the direct action would take, but it would not mean communal riots.

The president of the All-India Congress (Pandit Nehru) had a long talk with the Viceroy (Lord Wavell) to-day. He said later that he first learned of the Moslem League Council’s decision to withdraw its acceptance of the British Cabinet Mission’s proposals for a settlement of constitutional problems when he returned to Lahore after his visit to Kashmir. Therefore, he preferred to reserve comment until he had studied the Moslem League’s resolution. The working committee of the Moslem League also met in Bombay to dj?aw up a programme for future action.

No comment Was available in London on the action of the League council. It is believed that programme will be prepared for pressing the claims of the Moslems for Pakistan (separate Moslem State.)

A one-day..general strike was held at Calcutta ' yesterday in sympathy with the Moslem demands. Transport was at a standstill, newspapers were not published, and cinemas did not open.
