TEL AVIV COMB-OUT

143 JEWS DETAINED FOR INVESTIGATION (Rec. 3.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 30. It is officially stated that 143 Jews, including 10 women, were detained for further investigation as the result of to-day’s mass comb-out in Tel Aviv. There were no incidents. Police launches cruised along the city’s two-mile long sea front to prevent any suspects from escaping. Barbed wire cages have been erected lor those detained. The city was cordoned off by 13,000 paratroops, a platoon or company of whom was sent to every street. They moved quietly and methodically through the city and took the occupants of each building before the Palestine police, who sat at trestle tables in the streets to check credentials. No telephone or telegraph communications with the outside was allowed. No Hebrew newspapers will be published during the search. Royal engineers and sappers are manning essential services.

FOUR U.S. MARINES KILLED IN CHINA

(Rec. 3,5 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 30.

At least four United States marines were killed and 19 wounded in a convoy attack near Peking, says the Associated Press Peking correspondent. An American major said: “There is no doubt the attackers were really out to got the convoy. The ambush was very well timed and very well prepared.” A search is being made for marines who are believed to be still missing.

Army passengers in the convoy declared that the attackers would have wiped out the convoy had the marines not elected to jump back on the trucks and roar away under fire. The marines drove off the initial assaults, “in which the attackers threw everything at us except the kitchen sink.”

The marines sent a messenger through the encirclement for aid, which did not arrive. The escape was then planned. The trucks pulled out of the fighting area at full speed and regrouped after getting out of the danger area. The Communist General, Chou Enlai, referring to the attack, said the Communists had been provoked by marine intrusions into their areas in the past three weeks. The Communists, however, had absolutely no intention of unleashing a conflict.
