NURSES’ MEMORIAL

WESTMINSTER ABBEY ROLL

OF HONOUR

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 30.

The names of New Zealand nurses who died while serving overseas during the war are to be inscribed on a roll of honour, together with those of other British Empire nurses, and placed in a chapel in Westminster Abbey. A fund has been established in Britain as a memorial to nurses and midwives who lost their lives in the course of their duty during the period 1939-1945. The fund is called the British Empire Nurses’ Memorial Fund. Dominion nurses have been invited to join with nurses throughout the Empire in contributing to it. The following names of New Zea-land-trained nurses will be sent: Sister A. M. Buckley, N.Z.A.N.S. of Taihape; Sister Alma S. Crampton, N.Z.A.N.S., a graduate of the Christchurch Hospital; Sister Ellen F. Davidson, a graduate of the Dunedin Hospital; Miss Gladys L. Hughes, of Auckland, a graduate of the Thames Hospital; Miss A. A. Willis, a graduate of the Wairau Hospital, Blenheim. The war memorial chapel will be the nurses’ and midwives’ own memorial to their fallen colleagues. Those who served during the war with the regular nursing services will also be remembered in the memorial. These are Red Cross and St. John members and V.A.D.’s, whose ranks paid heavy toll for their devotion to duty.
