SHORTAGE OF COAL

PLIGHT OF AUSTRALIAN INDUSTRY (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 30. South Australian industry is threatened with a complete stoppage by Friday, because of the coal shortage. At the present rate of consumption the coal supplies will be exhausted on Thursday night and the next shipment from Newcastle is not expected before the week-end. Stop-work meetings in . Victoria have caused the industrial position there to become even more serious. The New South Wales fields are back to normal temporarily, pending conferences on the disputes in the north and the south.

Meanwhile, the Coal Industry Bill has been subjected to further attacks by owners. The secretary of the Southern Colliery Proprietors’ Association. Mr. W. F. McNally, said that the bill made possible confiscation of the industry without compensation. The New South Wales Combined Colliery Proprietors’ Association decided to oppose the bill and to press for amendment.
