GIANT ROCKETS
PLANS /OR UNITED STATES AIR FORCENEW YORK, July 29. Several score giant rockets, including some designed to ascend substantially higher than the Nazi V-2, will be built for the U.S. Army Air Force. They will be used to ascertain conditions in the upper atmosphere, states the Associated Press. Contracts are planned for the manufacture of 100 i-ockets capable of rising 130 miles, and costing 2,000,000 dollars. . They are expected to be ready in the autumn of 1947. Research officials state that these rockets will be strictly for a scientific purpose. They will ca"vy instruments to collect data on cosmic rays, atmospheric pressure and temperatures. Later a further effort will be made to explore the ionosphere with a whole family i of guided missiles, including one capable of rising- 500 miles above the earth with a 5001 b. load. 7
