WOOL FOR SPAIN

AUCKLAND TRADES COUNCIL BAN ON LOADING NATIONAL SUPPORT SOUGHT (P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 29. A decision was reached at a meeting of the Auckland Trades Council to oppose the loading of wool for Spain. This decision will be forwarded to the national executive of the Federation of Labour, asking for similar action to be taken throughout New Zealand. The following resolution was passed: “That we recommend, in conformity with the world-wide protest movement and the decision of the World Federation of Trade Unions, that no export of wool to Franco’s Spain be handled, and that this decision be forwarded at once to the national executive of the Federation of Labour for action on a national scale to prevent all shipments of New Zealand produce to Franco’s Spain, and for Government action to sever diplomatic and economic relations with Franco’s Spain.” A special stop-work meeting of the Auckland branch of the Waterside Workers’ Union supported the embargo on handling the wool. The secretary of the Auckland Trades Council has received advice of support from the Taranaki Trades Council and the Auckland branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. There is wool at Wellington awaiting shipment to Barcelona, but there are no ships to take it, and action is considered not necesary at present by the watersiders. The Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash) said this afternoon that no reply had yet been received in response to a cable message sent to the British Government regarding the loading of wool for Spain. The New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union is also awaiting a reply to cablegrams to the British Trade Union Congress and to London dockers.
