GOLF All-American Open Championships
CHICAGO, July 29
Herman Barron won the AllAmerican open golf championship at Chicago with an aggregate sepre of 280. The former Davis Cup tennis player, Ellsworth Vines, was one stroke behind. Sam Byrd followed with 284, and then Ben Hogan, 285, and Byron Nelson, 287. Barron, who' led from the start, finished with a par 72 after a fine 69 in the third round. Vines made a dramatic bid for the title with a last round of. 69. Mrs Babe Didrikson Zaharias won the All-American women’s open golf championship with 310 for the 72 holes. Miss Betty Jameson, with 317, was second, and Miss Patty Berg, with 321, was third. The winner’s score was six strokes above women’s par figures for the full distance. . The All-American amateur title was won by George Hamer (Georgia University), the national collegiate champion with an aggregate of 291. A Texan, Earl Stewart, was second with 292, and Strachan was third with 293.
