MORAL STRENGTH

THE FIGHT FOR PEACE AND FREEDOM BRITAIN SEEN AS LEADER (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 29. The belief that the British Commonwealth, not the United States, would lead the fight for freedom and peace, was expressed by the Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash) to-day, in opening a conference of former servicemen’s organisations. “The British Commonwealth will be the most powerful agent, sometimes the only agent; for the type of freedom we went to war for,” said Mr. Nash. “I say that not meaning to slight the United States.” From his recent trip to Britain and the Unifed States he was left with a tremendous impression of Britain’s moral strength, a heartening sign in the centre of the Commonwealth. It was not the same in the United States, where real unity was not apparent. •; “I met many great international thinkers, fine idealistic men, in America, but nevertheless I -don’t think we will get leadership from there,” said Mr. Nash. “They do not seem to be able to get the same coordination you find in the United Kingdom.” The feeling he had about the part Britain would play in the future of the world might be called intuition, said Mr. Nash, yet it was a feeling he had great jonfiderice in.
