BIG INCREASE GRANTED

WASHINGTON, July 26. The U.S. House of Representatives, by 229 votes to 61, has passed a Bill for the raising of the salaries of Congressmen, also making them eligible for pensions, and overhauling the legislative machinery. This is a tradition-shattering measure. It has reduced the number of House Committees from 48 to. 19, and the Senate Committees from 33 to 15. The Senate passed similar legislation on June 11. A Senate-House conference will adjust differences. The Senate measure would increase the - members’ pay z from 10.000 dollars to 15.000 dollars a year. The House has limited the rise to 12,500 dollars annually, but it has retained a 2,500 dollars yearly tax-free expense fund. The Senate measure has also provided for 8000 dollars for an administrative assistant fox- each legislator. The House has refused to accept this proposal.
