OUTLYING ISLAND

SPECULATION ON RADIO SILENCE

(Rec. 9.30 a.m.) RAROTONGA, July 28

The arrival of the schooner Tiare Tapooo at Pukapuka on Saturday morning from Rarotonga with the Resident Commissioner for the Cook Islands, a radio technician and new equipment, has ended long speculation on the radio silence at Pukapuka since January 5. As all the equipment was duplicated the possibility of the death of the resident agent and wireless operator, Reginald Savage, or other disaster was suspected. However, the silence proved to have been caused by a radio breakdown, and all was well on this outlying island where the schooner calls once a year.
