CANADIAN GOLD

NO SALE AT PREMIUM PRICES (Rec. 10 a.m.) OTTAWA, July 28. The acting Finance Minister (Mr. Abbott) announcing in the House of Commons proposals to help gold producers overcome financial handicaps created by the recent revaluation of the Canadian dollar, said that visions of export markets for Canadian gold at high prices were largely will-of-the-wisp. Government inquiries indicated that no significant amount of Canadian gold could legally be sold abroad at premium prices unless payment was taken in inconvertible local currency, which would be of no use to Canadian producers. Mr. Abbott rejected the mining companies’ suggestion that the Government permit the free export of gold to permit producers to sell to other countries at prices above the standard 35 dollars an ounce.
