DANGEROUS SLIP

LORRY DRIVERS REFUSE TO USE ROAD TIMBER SUPPLIES HELD UP Holding that the slip on the Greenstone road on the Kumara side of the Taramakau bridge is dangerous for heavy traffic, lorry drivers have refused to drive over it. The slip has given trouble for some time and was recently the subject of a letter from the Kumara Borough Council to the Minister of Works (Mr. Semple). The council asked that the work of forming the new road, for which a survey had already been made, should be expedited, as the slip was in a dangerous condition. three mills will be unable to send out timber until the road has been repaired. An official of one of the companies concerned said this morning that there was no doubt about the bad state of the road and confirmed the drivers’ statement that the slip was a menace. Mr. A. B. Bremner, assistant Public Works engineer at Greymouth, said this morning that, when the weather improved, every effort would be made to improve the road. It was impossible to do anything under the prevailing weather conditions, he added.
