SPORTING Betting Shops in Australia

With years of racing experience in different parts of the world, Mr. Ron Miller, journalist, is visiting Wellington to give evidence at the Royal Commission that is expected to meet at an eariy date to consider matters pertaining to the gaming laws of this country. In an interview, Mr. Miller said he was confident that betting shops in the Dominion would meet with far more success than in Australia. He explained the system as operated in Australia. Immediately the acceptances were published they were displayed on a board with the pre-post quotations alongside each horse, and throughout the week the bets laid were entered on a sheet, with figures indicating the amount of money held and the amount each horse was taking out. As a result, the bookmaker knew exactly how he stood, and likewise the punter. A system of taxation operated, and if a similar scale was introduced here it would be an enormous asset to New Zealand without affecting the racing clubs. Racing Control Mr. Miller went on tp say that racing control could be vastly improved in the Dominion if strict administration were brought into force. Quoting two examples, he said the continued reversals of form and the allowing of an appeal on the judicial committee’s finding were the subject of considerable comment and dissatisfaction. Further, racing, as an industry, should maintain principles that are upheld in other spheres of life.

A point worthy of mention was the procedure of removing an unfortunate horse that had been killed. The general practice is simply to rope the horse to the back of a vehicle and drag it off the track in the full view of thousands of horse-lovers. On the metropolitan courses in Australia, a special vehicle was employed for the purpose; blinds were drawn; and as the vehicle moved off the band, played the “Dead March.” This system, he said, might well be adopted in this country. Coaching Lads

Asked his opinion of the riding capabilities of New Zealand jockeys, Mr. Millar said that with correct coaching by experienced horsemen there was no reason why the younger boys should not hold theii - own with such renowned. “hoops” as W. J. Broughton, L. J. Ellis, H. N. Wiggins, etc. In N.S.W. four of Australia’s greatest riders, E. Bartie, D. Munro, M. McCarten, and E. McMenamin, quite often got the younger jockeys together and gave them theoretical and practical instruction. In concluding, Mr. Miller said that if sufficient evidence were produced before the Royal Commission on behalf of the adoption of betting shops, he had one plan alone that would make a return of approximately £1,500,000 yearly to the Taxation Department. News from Track and Stable

An Intersting Mating An item of interest to the bloodstock industry has been received from Mr J. G. Alexander, of the Cranleigh Stud, Maxwell, states the Dominion. This is to the effect that the English mare Foxberry, after several years of apparent sterility, is in foal to Coronach. Foxberry is by Son-in-Law and is a full sister to Foxlaw, the sire of Foxbridge. Mr Alexander 1 bought Foxberry at the dispersal of Mr Sol Green’s Underbank Stud, Victoria.

Death of Playsuit The Croupier-Floral Robe four-year-old Playsuit, who had shown some promise in her limited racing, died recently of an internal trouble. Mr L .Wilkinson, of Wellington, has put the younger half-brother by Broiefort in training under the care of W. Johnson, at Foxton.

Assistant Paid Stewards The New Zealand Trotting Conference has announced that the following have been appointed permanent assistant stipendiary stewards under the new scheme of control which dispenses with judicial committees at trotting meetings:—Mr L .A. Butterfield, of Christchurch; Mr T. H. Langford, of Christchurch; Mr H. H. Prins, of Christchurch; Mr A. W. Yorth, of Palmerston North; Mr G. Hunter, of Auckland.

Greatly Improved Arco left no room for doubt about the improvement he has made when he outclassed the field in the Hawke’s Bay Cup last week. Travelling easily throughout the race, he was ridden patiently by Sellars and after allowing Smith Quarry to take the lead half way down the straight Arco dashed past him and went on to win easily. Arco credits Coronach with another important success, Arco was bred by his owner and is from Aratulla an Arausio mare who was dam previously of Daniel Defoe whose promising career was cut short. Aratulla is a half-sister to Foxiana, Old Surrey, Hunting Lore and Battle--ground. Arco met with an accident in his younger days. He has been a nervous type of horse and his programme has been carefully planned. He comes from a great staying family, his second dam, Martulla, being by Martian from Tortulla by Torpedo from Honeysuckle tracing to the Sharkie taproot.
