MEN IN NATIONALISED MINES
LONDON, April 12.
The Minister of Fuel (Mr. Shinwell) announced that far-reaching steps were to be taken by the Government in the coal mining industry. He said“ The Essential Work Order, which ties miners to their pits, is to be lifted and the pits will be placed under the control of an Engagement Order. This order will tie the miners to the coal industry. It will leave the miners free to change from one pit to another pit. The right of a colliery manager to dismiss a man is therefore restored.” Mr. Shinwell referred to the attitude of those men who had elected to serve in the pits instead of in the armed forces. Mr. Shinwell said he was discussing the possibility of sending these' men to the forces. Speaking of these men, Mr. Shin-, well said: “We have considered whether we should prosecute, but we thought that it might be better to rid the pits of these undesirable elements.” • s
