SYDNEY DOCKS DISPUTE
CONSPIRACY ALLEGATIONS CANBERRA, May 12. A Government supporter, Mr. C. A. Morgan (Labour, New South Wales), in the House of Representatives agreed with an allegation by the Opposition that trouble on the waterfront was due to a conspiracy to create civil strife. Mr. Morgan said he agreed that there was an almost criminal conspiracy of delay on the waterfront.
He said: Those behind the waterfront conspiracy were no friends of the Labour Government nor of trade unions, servicemen, and the Allied cause generally. Some Communists had made a real contribution to the war effort but others, particularly the Trotskyites, aimed to disrupt the war. There was no doubt there had been sabotage against the Government by Fifth Columnists opposed to the war effortOther points made by speakers in the debate were: — Mr. Menzies, Leader of the Opposition: “Trouble promoters were assisted by the Government’s saying it could do nothing to stop them.” Mr. Anthony (Country Party, New South Wales): “Labour members should take a more courageous stand against Communist-controlled executives and propaganda ” Mr. Holt (Liberal, Victoria): “The introduction of British dock workers is a serious slight on Australia’s war effort.” „ . , The debate was talked out.
