BRITAIN’S NEW TANK
LONDON, May 11. It is officially revealed that the latest British tank, the Comet, led the advance across Germany after the Rhine crossing. It is Britain’s fastest and most heavily armoured cruiser tank. Developed from the Cromwell, the Comet has a RollsRoyce Meteor engine and a 77mm. gun, with new gun-laying devices which made it the most accurate tank gun in the British Army. No Comet fell into the enemy’s hands. PETROL RATION. LONDON, May 11. Mr. Churchill announced that Britain would return to a basic petrol ration within 30 days. Describing the ration as modest, Mr. Churchill said that it would approximate the present American ration. ITALIAN ARRESTED. LONDON, May 11. The Italian newspapers are strongly protesting against the arrest by Allied authorities of Carlo Andreoni, editor of the extreme left-wing weekly. “Partisan,” says the Associated Press Rome correspondent. Allied quarters decline to give the reason for the arrest, except to say it involves military security, and has no political foundation. SWISS~ACTION. RUGBY, May 11. The German Legation at Berne and all German Consulate offices in Switzerland have been officially sealed by the Swiss authorities. In Basle, a large quantity of compromising documents has been confiscated, although certain archives had been burned. The Swiss authorities intend to deport several notorious Nazi leaders in the next few days. In Geneva Swiss police have conducted house to house searches for members Qf the German Nazi Party, after closing the local German organisations’ and removing the swastika from buildings.
