BRITAIN’S NEW TANK

LONDON, May 11. It is officially revealed that the latest British tank, the Comet, led the advance across Germany after the Rhine crossing. It is Britain’s fastest and most heavily armoured cruiser tank. Developed from the Cromwell, the Comet has a RollsRoyce Meteor engine and a 77mm. gun, with new gun-laying devices which made it the most accurate tank gun in the British Army. The Italian newspapers are strongly protesting against the arrest by Allied authorities of Carlo Andreoni, editor of the extreme left-wing weekly. “Partisan,” says the Associated Press Rome correspondent. The German Legation at Berne and all German Consulate offices in Switzerland have been officially sealed by the Swiss authorities. In Basle, a large quantity of compromising documents has been confiscated, although certain archives had been burned. The Swiss authorities intend to deport several notorious Nazi leaders in the next few days. In Geneva Swiss police have conducted house to house searches for members Qf the German Nazi Party, after closing the local German organisations’ and removing the swastika from buildings.
