ANOTHER V.C. FOR INDIA
LONDON. May 9. The one hundred and thirty-ninth Victoria Cross of the war has posthumously been awarded to LanceCorporal Shaer Shah, of the 16th Punjab Regiment. Shah, at Kyeyebyin Kaladan, in Burma, realising that a Japanese force was about to destroy his section with overwhelming numbers, stalked the enemy from the rear, and broke up his attack killing a platoon commander and six Japanese. Shah, in spite of the loss of his right leg, twice more broke renewed attacks.
CHINESE SUCCESS j CHUNGKING, May 9 The High Command announced that the Chinese in Hunan Provincelaunched a general counter-offensive yesterday and broke though the Japanese lines at several points. The Chinese right wing reached positions south of the main highway leading to Chikhiang.
