BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
[TO the editor.] Si r) —May I be permit led to offer a bit of friendly criticism on the above matter in the hope that someone will wake up. I had occasion recently to drive round to Lydia Street via the Old Marsden Road, Spring Street and Hazeldine Street, and the pot holes, some of them three feet in diameter and six inches deep would break any car springs ever made. The same applies to supper High Street from the Hospital to the abattoir. The Borough has a crushing plant and should not be short of gravel unless it is too costly to waste on pot holes—this I could quite understand as I notice they still fill the hopper by hand costing at least 5/- per yard before it is crushed plus the horse, whereas with a bit of modern equipment it could be done for twopence a yard and no horse—even so a yard or two of this thrown into the holes would be an improvement but it appears to be nobody’s business. The Engineer appears to be occupied with the gas works but this should not be allowed to absorb the whole of his time to the detriment of just as important matters where no gas is required—if so, get a gas manager. Is there a works committee, if so why don’t they see that ordinary maintenance work is carried out or else get out and let some one else do the job? Greymouth is almost the highest rated place in New Zealand and I must say easily the most neglected from a municipal point of view. Yours etc., “RATEPAYER.”
