The hotels of Invercargill Licensing Trust will not be closed during V Day celebrations, At a special meeting of the Trust yesterday, members decided to rescind the resolution with reference to closing local hotels between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on V Day. The Trust recently communicated with the Acting Prime Minister to ascertain -whether the Government was taking any action about the closing of licensed premises, and the reply stated the Government was taking no action. This was misinterpreted to mean I that the matter was left solely in the hands of the Trust. The position therefore would have been that all licensed premises would be open with the exception of the Invercargill hotels savs a statement made to the Press by the trust. It would also have placed hotel proprietors in New Zealand in an unfair position as under the Licensing Act, they’were not permitted to close their premises unless instructed by the Government, although some ol them may have the same sentiments which actuated the Trust to suggest closing. Members felt that having asked the Acting Prime Minister for a lead, it would be most unfair for the Trust to be the only ones to close. —P.A.
