NATIONAL SERVICES

GREYMOUTH STATISTICS

Directions totalling 332 have been issued by the District Manpower Office of the National Service Department, Greymouth, up to May 31, 1943, since the regulations came into force. Of these directions 227 were in respect to males and 105 in respect to fernales. Two hundred and thirty-one of those directions were complied with, 48 were withheld, and the result of 53 has not yet been determined. Of the total 74 were in regard to men released from camp. Appeals were lodged in 21 cases of directions, 12 being dismissed and 18 allowed, while one was awaiting hearing at the end of the period. In connection with the Employment Restriction Order 92 applications were received up to May 31 for permission to employ new employees, 28 in respect to males and 64 in respect to females. These applications related to 118 employees. Permission was granted in the case of 116 and two were refused, the persons concerned in those two cases being directed into other work. Most of the persons being applied for are stated to be untrained, and mainly boys and girls of 15 and 16 years leaving school, applications being made for their employment in local shops and offices.

From the beginning of 1942 to May 31, 1943, 1109 applications were made in connection with employees in essential industry terminating employment. Of these, 168 were lodged by employers and 941 by employees. Twenty-seven were withdrawn, 922 granted, 156 refused and 4 were under action at the end of the period. In connection with the above decisions, 27 appeals were lodged, all by employees. These appeals were dealt with by the Christchurch Manpower Appeal Committee as follows: Allowed seven; dismissed 11; withdrawn four; and five were awaiting hearing on May 31.

Control of labour has been exercised in connection with the 922 cases in which permission was granted to terminate employment. Of these cases, 265 were retained in the same industry, 258 were transferred to other essential industries, 36 moved to non-essential industries, 191 were lost to industry through ill-health, retirement, marriage, etc., and the employment of the remaining 169 has not yet been determined.
