GOOD DISPLAY OF CATTLE CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 7. A. good display of fat cattle, and to a lesser extent .of sheep and pigs, was attracted by the National fat stock show and market, yesterday. The sale was sound throughout for a large entry. There was a slight easing in values for an overflow entry of 8000 head of fat sheep. Store Sheep.—A yarding of only 1800, the bulk being ewes. Values were little changed from those of last week, but for inferior ewes there was an easing of 1/- per head or more. The top price for two-tooths was 34/6. The best price for aged ewes was 24/6, and for hoggets 22/6. Spring Lambs.—High prices were offered for the best showing for some years. The entry totalled 50 head. The best made 30/- or more, and the demand for all sorts was good. The top price was 40/10. , , Fat Sheep.—A yarding of 8000 head in keeping with the double market. Generally, the sale was abbut 1/- per head lower for all classes. Extra prime heavy wethers to 49/1. Prime heavy wethers, 30/6 to 33/-. Prime medium-weight wethers, 27/6 to 30/-. Ordinary wethers, 24/- to 27/-. Light wethers.to 23/6. Extra prime ewes to 34/10. Prime heavy ewes, 23/- to 25/-. Medium ewes, 19/- to 22/6. Light ewes to 18/6. ” Cattle. —The show of prime cattle was about the best seen at the yards for some years. The best price was £2B/17/6 for a Hereford. The prizewinning pen of three Aberdeen Angus steers sold at £27. The champion fat beast of the previous day’s show, a Shorthorn cross heifer, realised £26 10/-. The total entry in the fat cattle section was 790 head. Good beef made from 41/6 to 44/- per 1001 b. medium to good 39/- to 41/-, and ordinary from 36/- to' 38/6 per 1001 b. There was a complete clearance of the heavy offering. Show steers, £2l to £2B/17/6. Extra good heavy steers, £lB/10/- to £2O. Prime mediumweight steers to £l6/15/-. Ordinary steers, £ll/10/- to £l4/5/-. Light steers to £lO/15/-. Show heifers, £l9 to £26/10/-. Extra good, £l3 to £l7. Prime heifers, £ll/10/- to £l2 15/-. Medium heifers, £9 to £ll. Light heifers, £6/5/-to £B/5/-. Extra prime cows to £l5/2/6. Prime cows, £9 to £ll. Medium cows, £6 15/- to £B/15/-. Inferior cows, £5 5/- to £6/10/-. Store Cattle.- —There was only a skeleton entry and no lines of young cattle were included. Little interest was taken in the sale. The odd pens of cows of which the entry was comprised met with an average demand, making up to £5 for fresh youngsorts.

Vealers.—The entry was of moderate size, and the sale was better than that of last week. A truck lot of Hereford cross calves from the West Coast averaged £5/10/-. Large runners to £ll/18/6. Others, £4/8/6 to £6 18/6. Good vealers, £3/13/6 to £5 10/-. Medium vealers £2/16/- to £3/6/-. Large calves 43/- to £3/5/-. Others 8/- to 39/-.

Dairy Cattle. —A large entry of 103, almost all of which were of indifferent quality. The bulk comprised cows still about a fortnight off calving, which met a slow sale. The few good cows offered were freely bought at prices up to £l4. The display of heifers was disappointing as most of them were small and backward. They met a dull sale at lower values. Best second, third and fourth calvers made £ll/10/- to £l4, medium £7/10/to £lO/10/-, and others from £3 10/-. Best heifers made to £l2, with medium £6/10/- to £B, and inferior from £4/10/- up. Fat Pigs.—The yarding of porkers was small for a double market and the quality was not up to the usual standard. Values opened" up at a shade better price than last week, but over the latter part of the auction they improved by 3/- to 4/- a :head. Choppers were in fairly heavy supply but values showed little change. Baconers were offered in fairly heavy numbers, but values showed little variation. Choppers, £3/1/6 to £7/17/6. Show choppers, £l2/10/- to £l3/10/-. Light porkers, 41/6 to 47/6. Medium porkers, 52/6 to 57/6. Heavy porkers, 59/6 to £3/9/6. Average price per lb. B.jd to 9;jd. Light baconers, £3/9/6 to £3 14/6. Medium baconers, £3/15/6 to £4/2/6. Heavy baconers, £4/4/6 to £4/9/6. Extra heavy baconers, £4 10/6 to £4/19/6. Average price per lb. 6jd to Store Pigs.—The entry was by no means a do'uble market, there being quite a number of empty pens. The whole sale was little better than that of last week. The only classes to attract 'any competition were the best quality weaners. Small weaners 8/to 10/-. Medium weaners 11/- to 15/-. Best weaners, to 19/-. Slips, 16/- to 21/-. Small stores 22/- to 25/-. Medium stores 26/- to 28/-. Large stores 29/- to 32/-.
