TO-DAY'S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME. December 2—Feilding. December 6, 7—Whangarei. December 7, 9—Woodville District. December 14—Otaki-Maori. December 14—Waipa. December 14 —Hororata. December 21— Manawatu. December 26 —Waipukurau. December 26, 28— Manawatu. December 26, 28—Dunedin. December 26, 28 —Taranaki. December 26, 30, January 1, 2— Auckland. December 28—Westland. Tiny: Although she is one of the smallest racehorses for soijie years, the Ringmaster filly, Minko, showed speed and pluck in filling third place in both two-year-old handicaps at the recent Ellerslie meeting. She is the first foal of the Limond mare, Severe, who won the Wellesley Stakes. Brother to Amiable:

The Psychology mare Agreeable, foaled a colt at the Flaxmere Stud, last week, to Lord Quex. The foal is a full-brother to Amiable, holder of the Australian and New Zealand mile record of 1.345. Serenata: Serenata, winner of thg New Zealand Cup, will not be raced over the Christmas and New Year holidays. According to her trainer, T. 'R. George, her next start will be in the Wellington Cup on January 16. Greek Queen: One of the beaten lot in the Alison Cup who is likely to do better in a smaller field is Greek Queen. She was a good way back early, and made a big run on the outside, which, not surprisingly, she could not sustain.

Won Easily: Sir General, who lost his rider at the start on the first day at Ellerslie, made amends on Monday. In the Vauxhall Handicap, he was always well placed, and he came away in the straight to win without pressure. ■ This horse will win again in the near future.

Only Two: There are only two three-year-olds in the entry list for the Auckland Cup. They are Beau Leon and Night Pilot (who recently returned from Australia, where he failed to win a race). It is over 40 years since a three-year-old won the Auckland Cup. Night Pilot’s chief recommendation is that he is related to Phar Lap.

Sure Pay: When the Cheltenham (Ellerslie) Handicap winner, Sure Pay, was offered at the yearling sales, he was passed in at 35gns., being acquired later by the Cambridge trainer, W. Townsend. Sure Pay failed narrowly on Monday, and his record now stands at two wins and three . seconds aggregating £720. He is a half-brother to the Great Northern ~Hurdles winner, Wee Pat.

Unlucky. 2 , ~ , An Auckland writer states that Cillas was definitely unlucky to have to take fourth place in the Pupuke Plate at Ellerslie on Monday last. This three-year-old is highly regarded, and may soon win a fair handicap. He is a black colt by Diatomous from Monanui. Diatomous is also the sire of Dinky Di, who won the sprint on the second day at Ellerslie.

Quick Rise: , Landveyor has come to the iront quickly. His form at Avondale indicated a good chance for him in the Melrose Maiden Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday last, but he drew wide and did well to finish sixth. He made amends on Monday m the Cautley Handicap, in which again he had none the best of the running, and he should help to keep the name of the defunct Surveyor before racegoers for some time yet. His dam, Royal Winton, is a sister to Lagoon, who won good races.

“Will Beat Colts”: Belle Cane will contest the Great Northern. Derby Stakes on New Year’s Day and in the words of her part-owner, Mr.P. A. O’Neill, she will beat the colts this time. Among the horses previously raced by the Messrs O’Neill are Lowenberg, who won-the New Zealand Derby m 1935; Paratoo, who was second to Cylinder in the same race in 1930, Algerian, Trim and Zarene. From the lastnamed, their owners bred Lowenberg, Trim and Algerian. Belle Cane is regarded as a probable starter in the Railway Handicap, as a prelude to the Derby.

Sires’ Success: , Representatives of the Auckland sires, Foxbridge and Vaals, were consistently before the public at the Ellerslie mid-Spring meeting. Foxbridge had three winners of four races in Foxola (two), Cornish and Ascot Bloom, while Esquire, Cornish and Duvach gained place money. Route March was the only . winner sired by Vaals, but Cheval de Bataille-, Radiant Vaals, Kraal, Valley Maid'and Joy Vaals were second and Elise and Kraal gained third placings. Stake-money won by the Foxbridge family totalled £1175, and representatives of Vaals secured £565.

Royal Chief a Real Stayer?: Royal Chief’s great success under a record winning weight-in the C.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap was apparent corroboration of the view that he is a champion at distances just short of two miles (says the Auckland “Herald”). In four starts in twomi.le handicaps he has finished respectively fifth (Melbourne Cup)-, fourth (New Zealand Cup), second (Sydney Cup) and fifth (New Zealand Cup).' At weight-for-age he has won once at the distance, in the A.J.C. Randwick Plate, in which the two miles took 3.43| to run. At 11 furlongs to a mile and three-quar-ters, however, Royal Chief has won the New Zealand Derby, New Zealand St. Leger, A.J.C. Colin Stephen Stakes (twice), A.J.C. Metropolitan, Canterbury Cup (twice), Wellington Handicap and C.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap. He has failed four times at 1| miles—in the Dunedin Cup, his second attempt in the A.J.C. Metropolitan, and the Great Autumn Handicap, each time under a big weight, and in the Great Northern Derby, in which his victor was Coq,rtcraft. .

Fine Form: Clockwork is in fine form at present and should win before the season is much older. He was unlucky in not getting more money than he 'did at Forbury Park. Consistent: Since joining T. H. Gunning’s stable, last Autumn, King Potts has won four races, and has recorded two seconds, three thirds and one fourth in ten starts. Molly Desborough, dam of King Potts, has foaled a filly by Jack Potts, and is to be mated with Sandydale. Makings of a Champion: Ronald Logan gives every indication of proving a good handicap performer. He has the attributes of a champion, being speedy, well mannered and freely endowed with stamina. He is by Logan Fraser, a horse by Logan Pointer, who has been practically neglected by breeders. He did not have luck with him at Forbury Park. Barred in Betting: Australia has unearthed - a young champion in Admirer, a four-year-old colt by Robert Derby—Lulu Love. At the Ascot Meeting recently Admirer scored his fourth successive win, and so highly were his chances esteemed that he was barred in the betting. He was not extended to complete a mile and a-half in 3.25 2-5. Back in North: The Mangere-owned pacer Kenworthy, who has been competing in Canterbury this season under the supervision of J. Young, returned north after racing at Addington, and he is to be given a special preparation for the Auckland Trotting Cup, in which he was runner-up two years ago to Navy Blue. While racing in the south, Kenworthy contested nine events for one win and three thirds, earning £305.

Asistants for Judges: The Rules of Trotting are silent regarding the matter of assistance to the judge. The rule 391, paragraph 1, says: “All races shall be judged by the duly appointed judge or his duly authorised substitute.” Paragraph 2 says: “The judge and any substitute judge shall be appointed by the body conducting the meeting or the committee thereof for such period and upon such terms and at such fees as may be thought fit.” Whether the Forbury Park Club has a rule of its own prohibiting the judge from taking an. assistant into the box with him is not known (says the Dunedin “Star”), but both the late Mr Rudkin and Mr Jarrett, who between them have officiated as judges for many years, did not have assistants.
