RICCARTON NOTES.

PLANS FOR HOLIDAY RACING [ShkbiAL TO “STAB.”J CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 9. Riccarton lias once again suffered from a spell ofdry_ weather... The. welcome fall of rain early in the month was expected to ensure favourable track conditions right up to the advent of the'Koßday . period of racing, but unfortunately a continuous week’s drying wind spoilt all the expected good effects of the charige. There is certainly a good coating of grass everywhere, but the ground beneath has become very hard, and’, as far as the grass tracks at Riccarton are concerned, they have now a harder surface than since \last summer, and very little galloping has taken'place .on any of them. In consequence the majority of the trainers liave had to depend upon the plough,; rind experience has indicated that the,, enforced practice of galloping continuously on. the plough and then being put on to hard grass tracks in races has been the downfall of many horses from YRiciar tori- Several meetings at Trenthaip in the past few years will support this contention. So long as soft grass tracks are encountered, Riccarton horses, have fared well after ..jihieir final prepara;ioris on the plough, but in cases where he grass tracks have; t>eep unyieldng, trie' visitors have failed badly. Practically, all of >the plans for xorses to race, at the various centres luring the holiday period have been lecided upon, but spine trainers deterred final arrangements until after he Hororata fixture. There is no loubt that the majority of Riccarton xorses will go to the Dunedin, Waicouaiti and Oamaru meetings, with lome going on from Wingatui to the Southland circuit. The North Island dll not attract the usual good teams, ilthough there will be a useful representative at Ellerslie, but strangely >nough the centre will not have the isual team of horses, racing at the Manawatu, Marton or Wairarapa fixures. Actually the only reprepentaive from Riccarton on this circuit will >e the Wellington-owned Haughty Vinner, who will have to improve a deal on his earlier efforts to have Inch chance, of winning races. His •rospects will depend mostly on the tate of the ~tracks. He is partial to , yielding surface. lorries for. Coast: The West Coast circuit promises to .ttract a much stronger contingent rom Riccarton than in recent years, nd. this, will include some fairly ;ood class horses, including Aggra■ate, Lady Middleham, Rebel Chief, diss Tasta, Merry March, Jan Ridd, toy Bun, Philibun, Skyrena, Passener, Gay Hussar, Phil, Fascinator, St. lloud, Muriet, Stiidley Royal nd Jed Forest. ..., There was s.om.e doubt regarding Jtylist' being ,sen£. to Ellerslie, but oilowing a satisfactory .gallop on Thursday, it was decided that she hould accpmpany. her stable riiate )mapo. Stylist has riot worked very trell since her disappointing displays ,t the New Zealand. Cup meeting, and ter at Ellerslie do not look •right, but. Ontario, who is a brother o Haerepo, is a distirici. possibility o earn Some money.' Haerepo shaped veil when taken : to Ellerslie two year?, go, and his form there encouraged a Jueerislarid buyer to pay 700 guineas or him, and the gelding soon repaid he outlay at the/ Brisbane .meetings. )mapo is a more .likely young horse han his relative at the same agp,. and s one deserving,of attention during he Ellerslie gathering., Hp is, owped >y his, breeder, P. V. Mason, who does lot often, travel far from home, uness he has reason to think he will vin some races.

)oria:* : ...... t The Iliad two-year-old Doria will be iroduced at Ellerslie in hey best form, md it will be interesting to see how ;he shapes against the elite of , the 'forth, Island juvenile brigade. There s no doubt Doria possesses a rare turn if speed, ,and southern race-goers vould not be surprised to see her race vith distinction on the trip. Defaulter is still being kept potterng abput ; by F. A. Roberts,. and preient intentions are to race him at iVingat'ui, ip. February and .at Trenham in March. All idea of taking him o Sydney again in the Autumn has ieen dropped. Defaulter’s trouble has lever been of a serious .nature, but levertheless has not encouraged any ■isks being taken. Provided he finishes in his light Autumn season satisfactorily, no doubt he will be taken to Australia in the Spring. Slenogil Retired: Glenogil has finished her racing •areer and will bo put to the stud lext season. Her form in recent weeks has been very disappointing, ‘Specially to an owner having his first ‘xnerience in the game, and it was de•ided that as she looked like continune to be expensive to put her out of ‘raining and to look out for another ikely gallopen by Mr. W. Gieseking. put on a float to-day to go to Hororata, but as she lost a lot of skin .nd hair by doing everything but kick lerself out of the float, she had to be aken off and left at home. The Duel Rao missed the trip owing to meeting with slight injuries from the same jource.

NOTES ON THE RACING.

[SPECIAL, TO “STAR.”]

CHRISTCHURCH, December 9.

The Hororata Racing Club had a most successful annual meeting today, the attendance being the largest for many years past, and although the increase in the totalisator turnover was not very big, and 1 the Club will lose the usual one per cent, rebate, the fixture should show sujfficient profit to enable the Club to carry on its programme on its own course. I • !■> H Overdue: Papernilla scored his first win when he beat some promising maidens in the Trial' Plate, second place being filled by Muriet, who finished better than the winner, blit made her run too late. Kohua Wins: Robin Hyde went to the front at the end of half a mile in the Glendore Trot, but up and interfered with some of the field, . including Shauri Aroon. Kohua then took charge and had a useful lead entering the straight, from Golden River and J Shaun Aroon. Koliua carried on to win easing up from Golden River, with a big gap to Shaun Aroon. Happy Man and Scapa Flow- were next.

First hi the South: The Bangor Highweight Handicap was won by Phil, who thus recorded his first win since being brought from the North Island by S. Bari 1 in July last. Improvident finished well into second place in front of Chit. Chat and' Ferriby. The lastnamed monopolised the betting on the race, but was never within striking distance of the leaders, and only appeared .to gallop at all seriously over the closing stages. His rider, H. Hibberd, was severely reprimanded for his riding, and was told to exercise better judgment in future.

Narrow Victory: Dinah Dhu entered her name on the winning list by . a harrow victory in the Novice Stakes. Pink Lad took charge .turning for home, aud was soon joined by Dinah Dhu. Pink Lad held on to a slight advantage until the last stride, when Dinah Dhu got up to win by a narrow margin. A deadheat would have been popularly received. Scarteen, a brother to Vintage and half-brother to Lady Graceful, attracted attention by his third placing in front of Nigella, who acted’ as pace r maker for a good way, but stopped early in the run home. This was probably her last race. First in 12 Months:

The principal event, the H. A. Knight Memorial Handicap, was won by Dictate, who has been trained by his owner, Mr M. O’Brien since the New Zealand Cup meeting. This was his first success for over 12 months, during which time he has had several minor placings in important events. He was due to leave next week for Te Rapa, to contest the Te Awamutu Cup on Saturday, but may not make the trip. He will, however, go to Ellerslie to fulfil his engagement in the Auckland Cup, in which he ran third last year. Gay Parade essayed to win to-day’s race from the early stages, and with half a furlong to go,, he appeared likely to hold' his position, but Dictate collared him a few strides from the post, and beat him, going away, by a head- Wine Card was a length away, in front of The Wrecker, but the latter was placed third. Both ■ Skyrena and Flame Queen failed to I race up to expectations.

Shanghai Lily’s Success: Shanghai Lily was confidently supported to win the Hororata Hack Handicap, and she duly prevailed, but .had to be kept u,p to her work to hold off a late run by Princess Minerva who with better treatment during the middle stages, would have been a more seious contender. King's Toast, who bore out badly on the turns, was a good third in front, of Elmarch, who piloted the field into the straight.

Favourite Beaten i Albertini, favourite for the Snowdon Trot, was never dangerous, and finished a moderate fourth. Rose Potts was the early leader from Brown Tap, Golden River, Durability, Robin Hyde, and Albertini, and this order was maintained for about six furlongs. Golden River drew to the front after passing the half mile, and led into the straight from Durability, Robin Hyde, Albertini, and Betty Boop. Robin Hyde finished very fast, and breaking Into a gallop nearing the post Golden River was all out to hold him off. Durability weakened into a fair third placing clear of Albertinin, and Betty Boop, Virginia Girl, Flash Bye, Loyal, Lady, Scapa Flow, and Betty Boop all failed to go out correctly. L. Frost, driver of Robin Hyde, was fined £ 2 for not making a sufficient' attempt to bring his horse back to his proper gait. West Coaster Easily: Philibun, a half-sister to Roy Bun, and racing in the same interests, outclassed her opponents in the Sahdown Hack Handicap. ..She was slow away, but worked her way to the front with half the journey covered, and was never in trouble thereafter, winning easily from Geat Legion. The latter was in front until Philibun passed him, but weakened turning for home. He then appeared 1 to be out of the contest, bu,t came with a renewed effort to beat the favourite, St. Cloud, whose effort was both expensive and disappointing. Rebellion, who is a stable mate to Dictate, was not produced, in this race owing to suffering ..from a bruised foot caused by walking ori a stone the previous day.
