PUBLIC SERVICE APPLICANTS
WEST COAST LIAISON OFFICER. Mr. C. F. Shapcott, of the Public Trust Office, Greymouth, has been appointed Recruitment Liaison Officer, for the West Coast. The duty of liaison officers will be to advise applicants for cadetship on the nature of the work required of them, and to direct them into the departments for which their qualifications are most suited. At the same time, the liaison officers will submit reports on the qualities and qualifications of the applicants, to the Commissioner. Mr Shapcott stated to-day, that the Commissioner would be in a position to offer immediate appointment to any boy who qualified this year for a Higher Leaving Certificate, and also proposed to make the appointments immediately after the results of the University Entrance and Public Service Entrance examinations were announced. It was expected that the Commissioner would be able to offer positions to all qualified applicants. He added
that the service offered a wide variety of occupations, particularly favourable conditions of employment, and a security of employment beyond what could possibly be offered by other institutions. Further, an officer's progress depended upon himself, advancement being determined not by seniority. hut by the combined considera-
tions of efficiency and suitability. As never before, he said, the public service was called upon to shoulder heavy responsibilities, and the successful handling of the various important problems confronting the Government
from time to time, required young men of the finest type for the service.
