NO BID FOR VICARAGE

LONDON, September 23.

Au entire village in Berkshire was this week sold by auction. Many inhabitants of Aldermaston, near Reading watched their homes sold to strangers. Mostly farm workers, very few were able to buy their cottages. One who was able to do so was Mr. F. Nash, a farm labourer on the estate for nearly 40 years. He bought his picturesque home, Yew Tree Cottage, for £33o,.and he also bought a small niece of land tor liis mother, which she lias used as a garden for nearly 60 ‘years. Mr. Nash, who paid his deposit with 33 £1 notes, said afterwards, "We just had to buy our cottage, we could not let anybody else have it.” The graetest. competition was for crowing timber. Highest price of the day. was £7OOO paid for Paices Wood, of 107 acres. No bid was made for the vicarage, but speculators paid £1.025 for the village cricket ground and pavilion.
