TEREMAKAU BRIDGE
“OBSTRUCTION ON THE HIGHWAY”
“It is a comic opera,” said Mr. Semple, Minister of. Public Works and Transport at. Hokitika last evening in describing the combined rail and traffic bridge over the Teremakau River. “I. had to wait there 15 minutes, today, on my way to Hokitika,” said the Minister feelingly. “We had then to wait, for a man to come across the bridge and open the gate. When he got across the bridge his tongue was hanging out. It put me in mind of Noahs Ark, and' it is a positive obstruction on the highway. With all due respect to the urgent requests now before me, I will say that if I had £22,000 available, I would instruct the District Engineer to call tenders and erect a new bridge. It is one of the first jobs that should be done in this district,” said the Minister. The crossing said the Minister, was a menace to public life and property. It was an obstacle on the highway. “Before I do any more jobs not provided for in the estimates, I want to get rid of this impediment on the highway to Greymouth. The rest of the route is definitely a fine highway, and this is a blot on it,” concluded the Minister.
