COBDEN SCHOOL

ANNUAL REPORT. Mr. M‘. E. Cressey, Chairman of the Cobden School Committee, will present the following report for the year ended February 28, to the meeting of Cobden householders which is to be held on Monday next: —Seven weeks had elapsed before a committee was constituted, and during that time the debts of the school had accrued to the amount of £l7, which had to be faced. The committee, with the assistance of tho women, raised funds by means of a shop day, thus wiping out all debts, and finally leaving a. balance of approximately £l4 at the close of the year. The school staff have individually done their utmost to advance their pupils, and the Inspector’s report was a credit to all concerned. The attendance was not all that could be desired, but owing to an epidemic of measles, on no fewer than 27 occasions the attendance fell below the necessary 75 pea cent. During the year 'a new infant room was opened to accommodate the large number of primers, thus doing away with the using of the ill-lit temporary converted room. A considerable amount of asphalting, has been completed during the period, practically the whole of the upper playground being sealed. This work was carried out by the Public Works Department. Further improvement is necessary to .the lower portion of the grounds by the removal of gorse and blackberries, which we hope to have done, as funds permit. The annual concert was held at the close of the year, and was a success, a capacity liouse meeting the efforts of both stall' and committee, thus making available once again the prizes earned by the respective recipients. Those less fortunate were provided with sweets on break-up day. Through being unable to field a. committee the Home and School Association has ceased to function, and at their annual meeting passed all moneys to the school committee. 1 wish to place on record appreciation of their help. With a portion of this money, now banked, we intend ot instal radio equipment, and any further requirements in and about the school. I wish to record with regret the death of the late Mr. Watkin. The euchre tournaments are not as successful as hitherto, and the weekly forty-fives will be held during the Winter months. Finally, I wish to thank all who have assisted in any way.”
