He led past the stand from True Pronto, Chameleon, who made a fast begin-

ning, Lady Milne and Clive Brook. Worthy Mac led Chameleon, Lady Milne and True Pronto into the home stretch, and these were the only ones with a chance. Worthy Mac came on to win easily by a length and a half from Lady Milne, who finished better than Chameleon, by three lengths. True Pronto was fourth, with Last Hand. Janet Gaynor, and Clive Brook next, well back. Tote £6071.

Improved Form: Countervane, an eight-year-old Weathervane gelding, improved on his third at the Kumara meeting, when he won the Railway Hack decisively. He was first to show out, but when they had settled down Real Lady was the leader from Countervane. Skyreila, Malvasia and Bright Prospect. Real Lady led into-the straight from Countervane, .Bright Prospect and Skyrena, but in the -run home, Countervane came through and stayed on to win by a length from Skyrena, who finished brilliantly half a. length in front of Real Lady. {Bright Prospect was fourth, ahead of Malvasia, Gilford and Comus. The favourite, Real Lady, had every chance, but Bright Prospe t was closer at the finish than at any other stage. Toto £7431.

Golden Chest Again: • Golden Chest completed a treble in principal events on the circuit, when she easily won the President’s Handicap. after her successes at the first Greymouth meeting and the Kumara fixture. Kilrobe, after she and Pladie had delayed the start, secured several lengths break on the field, leading past the stand from Roy Bun, Golden Chest, Potent and Pladie. Along the back, Golden Chest moved up, and closely followed Kilrobe into the straight, with Pladie haridy, and Roy Bun moving up, but several lengths away. Golden Chest came away to win by a good two lengths from Kilrobe, who tired, with Roy Bun finishing on three lengths away, half a length ahead of Pladie. Potent was tailed off. Kilrobe took too much out of herself early, and when the real racing began she had nothing in reserve. Roy Bun finished on well, after drifting two furlongs from home. The .other two were outclassed. Tote £7501, with Kilrobe the favourite by £3/10/- from the winner.

A Sterling Performance: Land Raid put up a sterling performance with the steadier of 10.3, to won the Runanga Handicap, his third on end on the circuit. Rebel Rank and Flame Queen led Land Raid into the straight, with Nolana next. Once straightened up, Land Raid came away, and won decisively by a length from Flame Queen, who finished well, half a length ahead of Rebel Rank. Nolana was fourth a length away, followed by Passenger and Donadea. Rebel Rank showed early speed, and Flame Queen ran her best race on the circuit. Contrary to their running during the previous week-end, Nolana and Donadea were never in the leading division. Land Raid was always well placed, and, well-handled, won reservedly. Tote £827.

Another Treble: Don Acron became the .fourth treble winner of the circuit, when he won the Omoto Trot, after making up his ground steadily, and finishing brilliantly. Chameleon led out, and past the stand was followed by Lady Milne, Clive Brook, Worthy Mac and True Pronto, with a break to Don Acron. Chameleon entered the home stretch just ahead of Lady Milne and Worthy Mac, with Don Acron starting to put in his claim. Lady Milne soon settled Chameleon and Worthy Mac, but Don Acron came with an irresistible run to beat his stable-mate by a length. Chameleon was three lengths away third, with Atarau Queen, who finished well, close up fourth, ahead of Worthy Mac and True Pronto. Tote £8521.

Not Headed: Shangri La went to the front from the start of the Ahaura Hack, and was never headed. He was followed into the straight by Aggravate, who was nearly last early, Pol Roger, Papernilla and Bright. Prospect. Shangri La was never in danger of defeat, ami won by a clear two lengths from Pol Roger, who was a neck in front of the fast finishing Papernilla. Bright Prospect finished well for fourth, ahead of Gilford. Aggravate failed to stay on, after going from last to second in about two furlongs—a big task under his impost of 9.12. Shangri La was not produced at the Kumara meeting, but over six and a half furlongs at the first Greymouth meeting, ran last in a field of eight. Tote £8095.

Earlier Form Confirmed: Confirming her brilliant finishing effort of earlier in the day, Skyrena, this time assisted by a good beginning. won the Farewell Handicap well, from the little-fancied Potent, who ran his best race of the. circuit. Skyrena made the running from Potent, Nolana, Windward, Fidelis and Rebel Chief. Skyrena was still the leader from Potent, Rebel Chief and Fidelis together, and Palmyra, as they swung into the straight, and in a desperate finish Skyrena stayed on to win by a neck from Potent. Fidelis was a length away third. finishing well, ahead of Rebel Chief. Palmyra, and Nolana, with Windward tailed off. The hot favourite, Fidelis, was rather slow to find his feet, but finished well. Rebel Chief failed to make his usual good beginning, and when fairly well placed in the straight failed to make up any leeway. Tote £11075.

NOTES ON THE RACING. AIRAM WINS HURDLES. [special to “stab.”] AUCKLAND, April 15. Airam was third to Agog and' Mia Acrea, who took turns as pacemaker in the Avondale Hurdles, until she hit the front five furlongs from home Thereafter, the issue appeared to be safe in her keeping. Agog was close up at the last hurdle, but Airam had too much pace for the former Hawke’s Bay performer. Mia Acrea was a poor third. Electric Spear was always in the rear and evidently feeling the ground. Airam has been out of the money only twice in a dozen starts this season, and this was her third success over the battens. First Victory: Silver CloutL a. .three-year-old filly by Appellant, gained her first win in easy fashion in the Rosebank Handicap. Cintrace began best and' passing the half-mile, she was closely attended by Silver Cloud, who had been fourth out of the barrier. Royal Fawkes, Hunting Squire, Nordic Song, and Vaalso were also prominent. Cintrace soon quit in the straight and Royal Fawkes looked dangerous at the distance, but Silver Cloud and Vaalso finished more strongly. Nordic Song was a, close fourth, succeeded by Kittle, Bronze Moth, Lady Kew and British Talent. Silver Cloud is very promising, and Hunting Squire showed speed, [mt finished' greenly. Bronze Moth was bad at the barrier, but she lost no ground at the start, and did not run up to expectations.

Memorable Finish: The finish of the Foley Memorial Handicap was a memorable one. for those who fought out the close finish were in the rear division until the final run. In winning under 9.13, Round Up added palms to his decoration as the best handicap horse in the province of Auckland, and Cold Vaals who covered a great deal of extra ground, gained great credit in defeat. Golden Sheila also ran up to her recent good efforts at Ellerslie. Anion led out, but within a furlong rushed up to join him in the lead. Turning into the back, Anion led Galilee by a length, with Rulette, De Friend, Valamito,, Balinavar and King Theo in close order. Round Up, Golden Sheila ami Gold Vaals were in the next division, but clear of the whippers-in, Coronation ami Muster Briefly. King Theo was second into the straight, Round Up being fifth, and Gold Vaals fourth to last. At the distance. Anion. King Theo ami Rulette were hanging on to the lead, with Round Up, Gay Rebel. Gold Vaals and Golden Sheila making their bids almost simultaneously. In a great battle to the post, Round Up forged to the front, and wmi by a neck from Gold Vaals, who fini lied in the middle of the course a head in from of Golden Sheila. Rulette war, foiirih, chased in by Balinavar, ami Gay Rebel, Anion and Valamito.

Wyndora Succeeds: Always possessor of exceptional speed. Wyndora stayed on better than hitherto to win the Oakley Memorial at tong odds from Nora Gregor, whose performance under 9.0 was full of merit, and Our Jean, another speedy filly who has a future. Wyndora got the jump-out, but at the half-mile Heroic Maid led Wyndora, Surmise and Nora Gregor. These four were first on to the straight from Commemoration, who ran wide, Gold L mgs and Fcxmond, who began slow-

ly. Ar. the liulf-disl.a mo if. was anyi.no’s race bin Wyndora, tint oul, beat Nora Gregor bv a- neck, with Our Jean a head away. ’ La. Vie was a. good fifth, with Foxmond, Surmise and Gold Wings next.

Pirate King Again: The top-weight in the Railway Handicap, I'irato King, completed the double in winning another tight finish. This was his I bird victory in his last live starts, 'f’cjioio ran to the front from. Calorie amt’ Gay seton within furlong, and Tepoto led into the straight, from I’anlstre, Lady Meath, Silver Eagle, Pirate King utid Guy Seton, ali in close order. Tepoto dropped out as soon as they put on the pressure, amt Pirate King asserted himself about 810 yards from the post, io cross the line a head in front ol

Gay Seton, witli half-heads between the latter, Lady Meath ami Palustre. Next were Calorie, Tepoto. Silver Eagle. Full Hand and Triune. The last-named delayed the start, and tailed’ the field throughout. Gay Seton made a good place return. Consistent Brazilian: Brazilian crowned his recent consistent record with a. win in Hie Wha.il Handicap from Eastern Heir and Trevace, who. were both at good odds. Tlio first out were Eastern Heir, Brazilian and Pocket Venus,

then Trevace ran up second to be clear of a bunch. Eastern Heir and Trevace were still clear at the straight from Mio Fratollo, Master Appellant, Brazilian, Pocket Venus, Ora King ami Hessketoon. Another keen struggle ensued, Brazilian gradually wearing down Eastern Heir to win by a long neck, with Trevace half a, head away. Saccoue was a good fourth, next, to arrive being Pocket Venus, Spinning Wheel, Ora King and Hessketoon. Brazilian is now out of hacks. Ora. King was unlucky in the

running'. Favourite Outstayed: Black Musk was always well placed in the Titirangi Handicap, and in a great duel in the straight with Ivar he outstayed the topweight to win by a, head. Jayola. made a. good showing to finish half a length away, and Inver who ran prominently throughout was fourth. Very Glad, the pacemaker, retired in the straight. The winner was favoured by a 71b allowance.

ROUGH RIDING TACTICS. (Recd. April 17, 8 ami.) SYDNEY, April 16. That the Randwick meeting just concluded was marked by some of the roughest riding tactics in the history of local racing is the verdict of several critics. What happened to Defaulter. and the fact that other good horses received cuts and abrasions are mentioned among other instances. Several horses were nearly on their noses. Limulet was badly scarred. Cardinal Puff suffered a broken hind fetlock, but may be saved for the stud. Undue crowding at the barriers spoiled the prospects of heavily-backed candidates. Even Ajax had a narrow escape. He limped into the weighing enclosure with one shoe hanging by one nail, and a severe cut on the other foot. The jockeys. AV. Cook and A. Podmore have been suspended for two months for careless driving.

PRAISE FOR DEFAULTER. SYDNEY, April 17. The “Sydney Morning Herald” says: Defaulter showed his real class when he won the A.J.C. Plate on Saturday.; Many thought that Spear Chief and Mosaic delayed their runs against Defaulter for too long, but they overlooked the magnificent judgment displayed by the jockey, Ellis. The time was the second slowest ever taken for the race. Defaulter will return to New Zealand recognised as one of the best three-year-olds ever bred there. J. H. Abbs headed the list of winning trainers for the meeting, with £7070, for which Mosaic was mostly responsible. Mr. H. D. Greenwood (owner of Defaulter) won £2075.
