Before giving the third reading, with a debate, to the Export Credit Guarantees Bill, the Commons heard an explanation by Sir J. Simon of the Currency Bank Notes 1 Bill.
Sir J. Simon emphasised, several times, that there is no question of any change in the monetary policy. The Bill made no sort of difference to the fundamentals of British currency. It made certain changes in the machinery, and it provided for the more accurate presentation of facts, by showing the true value of the gold cover for the note issue. The proposals contained no trace of inflation nor deflation.
NGN-SHRINKABLE WOOL
LONDON, February 6
A new method of producing nonshrinkable wool by using “enzymes”— completed substances in living cells —is disclosed in a. Department of Scientific and Industrial Research report.
One type suitable for the process is papain, obtained in the milky juice of the pawpaw, which can be controlled chemically. Apparently, the substances specifically act on certain regions of the wool fibre, but it is too early to place reliability on the treatment.
PLAGUE AT RANGOON
LONDON, Feb. 6
Lloyd’s advise that the Government of Netherlands East Indies, has declared Rangoon plague infected as from February 3. CANADA’S DEFENCE OTTAWA, February 6. As an alternative to national registration, the Government, has completed a full census of all professional classes. Il is prepared to launch national registration, without delay, if it becomes imperative. EMPIRE AGRICULTURE LONDON, February 6. Sir R. Dorman Smith, addressing the Farmers’ Union, eulogised the benefits of the Sydney conference, as laying the foundation of Empire cooperation. He added that the Dominion farmers were prepared to take advantage of this, in preference to cutthroat competition.
