WAIKATO SESSIONS. [PEB PBESB ASSOCIATION.] HAMILTON, February 7. Two prisoners found guilty during the criminal .session of the Supreme Court at Hamilton, were sentenced to-day by Mr Justice Smith. Ernest. Roy Thornton (31), found guilty of negligent driving at Whatawhata on. September 3. thereby causing the death of Ma'nrice Desmond Kely, was admitted to probation for two years, ordered to pay costs £5B 10/9, and was also instructed’ to take out a prohibition order during the term of his probation. His present driving license was cancelled, and he was debarred from holding another license for five years. Cha'rles Edward Salter (38), stock dealer, Taumarunui, found guilty of theft of cattle, was fined £75, and ordered to pay costs £33/11/4. He was allowed one week in which to pay, in defau.lt six months’ hard labour.
WOMAN'S TRIAL WELLINGTON, February 6. The trial commenced in the Supreme Court to-day of Mary Wearne, aged 57, married, who pleaded not guilty to a charge of unlawfully using an instrument with intent to procure a. miscarriage. Mr. Justice Blair presided. The Crown case was. conducted by the Crown Prosecutor (Mr. W. H. Cunningham) and the accused was represented by Mr. J. A. Scott. The Judge made an order clearing the Court during the hearing of evidence, and also prohibited publication of the name of the- principal Crown witness, who was 17 years of age on December 26. The offence is alleged to have been committed last month.
