VICTORIAN BUSH FIRES

MELBOURNE, February 3
Inquests into the deaths of two of the bush fire victims at Toolangi were opened at Healesville to-day, and were adjourned. The coroner stated that a person who caused fires might yet find himself charged with manslaughter.
Evidence w r as given that this fire had later spread to Narbethong, where it caused the deaths of six people. Arising out of the recent bush fires, tw’enty persons -were charged at the Ferntree Gully Court to-day with having lit fires in proclaimed areas during proclaimed periods. Fines yvere imposed ranging from £lO to £35. Sev- ( eral cases were adjourned.
Another case concerned a youth who was said by’ a constable to be subnormal. He was remanded for seven days.
The police alleged that the youth said he wanted to burn out a man. He was always picking at him. Several of the men fined said that they lit fires to burn breaks so as to protect their properties. A schoolboy, aged eighteen years, a well known firefighter, who said that he was unaware that the regulations applied to the burning of rubbish, was fined £lO.
