LOVE OF BOOKS
A RADIO COMPARISON. Dr. Albert Mansbridgc, Chairman of the Trustees of Die National Central Library, spoke at Abbotsholme School (Derbyshire) speech day recently, and opened the new school library. Here are some of his remarks about books: —
Our age is so used to books that we tend to lose our reverence for them. The book is not a whit behind the greatest of modern inventions. If I want to hear the best that living men can speak 1 have to go to a hall or turn, on the wireless at a time which suits them. But I read the best, highest, and noblest thoughts or the rich records of learning of men at a time which suits me, and my book is never impatient.
The nobility of books is such that they should be given respect and reverence.
Everyone should strive to love books —not to be slaves to them —using them for specific purposes. No books draw the hearts of men and women like those they loved, as children, and the force of education, working rightljs will bring boys to the bdoks they love.
