DRASTIC GERMAN LAWS
DEATH FOR KIDNAPPERS
BERLIN, June 23. Germany has followed the example > of America and introduced the death penalty for kidnapping. In a law promulgated today above the signatures of Herr Hitler and Dr. Guertner, Minister of Justice, it is provided that anyone who kidnaps a minor under 18 years of age for purpose of extortion will be punished by death. Kidnapping is a rare offence in Germany, but a case occurred earlier this month in Bonn, and this it is understood, occasioned the sudden appearance of the new law. The 12-year-old son of a business man was kidnapped by a professional criminal. The kidnapper was arrested as he was collecting the ransom he had demanded. The law is made retrospective to June 1, so that the death penalty may be applicable in this case. 'Under the new criminal code the “violation of racial honour” is to be rendered a criminal offence. This will,; for instance, make.it punishable for a; Jew to dance with an “Aryan” in a public place. i A remarkable change is to be made in the law of libel and slander. Anyl insult to “the Fuehrer, the Reich' Government, leading personalties of ( the National Socialist movement, or leaders of the fighting forces” will be summarily punished, and the Court' will not be permitted to go into, the truth, or otherwise .of the statements made.
